Tupelo holds a BA in English--Creative Writing from the University of Southern California and an MFA in fiction from Columbia University. While working at OLL she also taught English composition long-distance. Her work has been published in a number of literary journals, and her novel, ''girlchild'', was published February 2012.<ref>''girlchild'' Website. She joined the OLL team in February 2010 after participating in NaNoWriMo since 2003 and assisting the shipping captain Bradford Earle in 2009.
