What on earth is going on at NaNoWriMo HQ? Here's a high level summary compiled by an anonymous community member.
Word Count API
The NaNoWriMo Word Count API, or wcapi, is a tool created to let NaNoWriMo talk with external apps. The API was originally read-only, meaning the primary purpose is to visualize word counts and other stats with external apps. As of 2014, the Word Count API is writable, which lets Wrimos build apps to update their word count as well as visualize one's progress. During November, the stats provided by the API update once an hour.
The Word Count API was not public for NaNoWriMo 2019. As a result, the Word Count Widgets, Word Count Scoreboards, and the unofficial Nano Faces were unavailable, as well as third-party tools such as the NaNoWriMon tracker and Dabble's automatic word count submission. However, Wrimo CraftSpider has documented the existing (but hidden) API via a Python client.
NewMexicoKid and Russ Uman developed the original version of the API.
