Forum badges are the badges a Wrimo can earn on the NaNoWriMo forums. They were introduced in 2019 with the transition to Discourse hosting the forums.
NaNoWriMo forums-specific badges
NaNoWriMo has some custom forum badges for the NaNo community. In fact, the NaNoWriMo staff asked for forum badge suggestions during the site preview period.
- Beta Tester 2019: Earned for helping beta test the preview NaNoWriMo site and the new Discourse forums before the September 2019 launch. It was assigned manually by posting in this thread. This badge can be used as a title.
- Bug Hunter: Found a bug on the NaNoWriMo website or forums and reported it in the support forum. This badge is assigned manually.
- Exemplar: Earned for making an outstanding contribution to the NaNoWriMo community. This badge is assigned manually.
- Greeter: Earned for being friendly and helpful to new Wrimos. This badge is assigned manually.
- Jailbird: Earned for running out of likes. This badge is assigned manually after posting to the Like Jail thread. Wrimo tdgor suggested this badge[1].
- Mod Minion: Earned for timely and appropriate flagging of posts. This badge is assigned manually and can be used as a title.
- Municipal Liaison: Earned for being a Municipal Liaison. It's unknown if MLs lose this badge upon deciding not to return for the next November NaNoWriMo event. This badge is assigned manually.
- Thememaker: Earned for creating a Discourse theme that was accepted and installed on the NaNoWriMo forums. This badge is assigned manually.
- Velociraptor: No one really knows how you earn this badge, but it's assigned manually. This badge can be used as a title. Wrimo pipn_t suggested this badge as a joke, but then it caught on, eventually spinning off in one of the largest threads in the forum[2].
- Voice of Reason: Earned for being a calm, soothing presence that encouraged others to get along when things get tense in a forum thread. This badge is assigned manually and can be used as a title.
Built-in Discourse Badges
Discourse provides many badges built in as part of its gamification system for learning the forums. Many of these can be earned quickly after joining, such as creating a topic, replying to a post, editing your post, completing the user tutorial with Discobot, liking or reacting to a post, and linking to a post.
You can also gain badges after reaching the next Trust Level or receiving a certain number of likes on a post or thread.
Note that filling out your profile on the main NaNoWriMo website will transfer that profile over to the forums, earning you the badge.
