Luddite clause
The Luddite clause is the verification method of choice for those who are unable to verify in the traditional way. The name of the clause is a humorous reference to the handwriters' resistance to using modern technologies to write their works. The first step in the luddite clause is for the Wrimo to have a third party verify that they have written at least 50,000 words (or 100 pages in the case of Script Frenzy), although it is possible to skip that step (beginning with the instructions in the next paragraph) without making anything look fake as the Staff does not 'check' for compliance with the 'third party' step.
The prospective winner then uploads 50,000 words from a lorem ipsum generator to the word count validator in order to win. In the case of Script Frenzy, the writer uploads a 100-page .pdf file containing whatever they wish.
Handwriters are the primary target of the Luddite clause, but others can use this clause as well. The primary non-handwriters are those who lost their work in the middle of the month and choose not to rewrite from the beginning, those who use a typewriter or electronic typewriter not compatible with PCs, or those who are writing in non-Latin characters, as the validator is unable to validate non-Latin characters.
Alternate verifications for handwriters has existed as long as Wrimos have handwritten their novels and can be found in the forums as far back as 2003. The concept and phrase "Luddite Clause" has been on the forums since at least 2005, however it was not made an official part of the FAQ until 2008. Originally, the Luddite Clause (when it existed solely on the forums) involved the verifying third party contacting the staff for a manual win, but was changed to the Lorem Ipsum version when it was added to the official FAQ.
