Write or Die
Write or Die is a writing tool created by Dr. Wicked in October 2008 under the conclusion that "a tangible consequence is more effective than an intangible reward". It has both an online version and a desktop version.
Their are four options that can be set:
- Consequence: What happens if a writer stops writing. In gentle mode a popup window appears, reminding the writer to get back to work. In normal mode, annoying sounds (such as a tritone or "Never Gonna Give You Up") begin to play that will continue if and only if the writer continues to write. Kamikaze mode unwrites the writer's work by deleting the words written, starting with the last and moving backwards. An electric shock mode is also shown in the consequences but is not available. Dr. Wicked has stated that if electric shock mode is ever available, it will be available only in the desktop edition. This feature has existed since Write or Die was launched.
- Grace Period: The amount of time before the screen turns red and before consequences commence. Forgiving mode allows the writer to stop writing for thirteen seconds until the screen turns red and 23 seconds until consequences. Strict mode gives the writer seven seconds until a red screen appears and seventeen seconds until punishment. Evil mode permits only one second until the red screen appears and ten seconds until doom. This feature was added on November 9, 2009, soon after Write or Die 2.0 was released.
- Word goal: The number of words to be written in this session. A victory sound plays after reaching the word goal. This word goal field has existed since the beginning of Write or Die, though the victory sound was added with the variable grace periods.
- Time goal: Choose the time goal from the drop-down box. Current options include 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 48 minutes, 1 hour, 75 minutes, 90 minutes, and 2 hours. A victory sound plays after reaching the time goal if the word goal was not reached first. The time goal field has existed since the beginning of Write or Die with fewer options, though the victory sound was added with the variable grace periods.
Other features that were released with Write or Die 2.0 on November 7, 2008 include a pause button, a widget at the end of a writing session, a button to finish the session, and more evil sounds.
At the end of November 2008 Dr. Wicked announced the development of a desktop edition of Write or Die. It was released in October 2009 for $10 and is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Features include disabling backspace and save, customizing time limits and grace periods (the latter with a slider), using fullscreen mode and keeping Write or Die on top, viewing statistics, backing up writing sessions, blogging results, and word warring with other users.
