The NaNoWriMo Word Count API, or wcapi, is a tool created to let NaNoWriMo talk with external apps. The API was originally read-only, meaning the primary purpose is to visualize word counts and other stats with external apps. As of 2014, the Word Count API is writable, which lets Wrimos build apps to update their word count as well as visualize one's progress.

NewMexicoKid and Russ Uman developed the original version of the API.
