Week Five is a period of the challenge that varies in length from 0 to 3 days, depending on whether a month has 28, 29, 30, or 31 days. It starts on day 29 and ends no later than day 31. It does not exist during February of Non-Leap Years.

Week Five is the absolute last chance to write the needed words to reach one's goal for the month. It is a time of high site traffic, large amounts of word wars, high strain on the validator, and, on occasion, great miracles, such as Heather Dudley writing nearly 15,000 words during the last 3 days of NaNoWriMo 2012 in order to reach 50k.

The validator, which opens about halfway through week 4, closes promptly at 11:59:59 pm on the last day of week five in a user's local time. If a user reaches 50k before that time but does not submit it to the validator in time, they may apply for late validation. If a user does not reach 50k before that time, they have lost the event.
