NaNo Prep
- If you're looking for the forum formerly known as NaNo Prep, see Prepping & Outlining.
NaNo Prep is a NaNoWriMo program that takes place four to six weeks before NaNoWriMo begins. In a less formal sense, NaNo Prep can also refer to any activity a Wrimo undertakes in preparation for writing a novel. These activities can relate to the writing itself or the non-writing aspects of a Wrimo's life.
Examples of NaNo Prep
NaNo Prep can mean different things to different Wrimos. Some activities a Wrimo may do as NaNo Prep include:
- Develop a story idea
- Collect lists of names and places
- Outlining
- Character sketches
- Worldbuilding
- Creating a beat sheet
- Making time for NaNoWriMo
- Preparing food in advance
- Figure out where to squeeze writing into a busy schedule
This is not a comprehensive list. Some Wrimos, especially planners, may do a lot of these things as part of NaNo Prep, while others may do just a few.
NaNo Prep in the NaNoWriMo Community
While NaNo Prep has been a topic of discussion in the NaNoWriMo forums for a long time, NaNoWriMo HQ officially embraced NaNo Prep in 2012 with a few NaNo Prep-related blog posts[1]. The first official NaNo Prep day happened on October 17, 2012[2]. The day featured NaNoWriMo tips shared via the #NaNoPrep hashtag on Twitter along with discussion on the NaNoWriMo forums.
September 2013 welcomed the formal start of NaNo Prep season with a donation-supported webinar featuring Chris Baty, Tavia Stewart-Streit, Lindsey Grant, and published Wrimo Rachael Herron.
NaNoWriMo 2014 introduced a dedicated NaNo Prep page[3] and the NaNo Prep forum, featuring more resources to help Wrimos in their journey to November. Since then NaNoWriMo has hosted tweetchats, webinars, and virtual write-ins as part of NaNo Prep.
