The NaNoWriMo forums are the primary online hub of activity for Wrimos to communicate with each other. They are by far the largest facet of the NaNoWriMo website and consume the most site resources. Many Wrimos solely attend to the forums (often when in-person meetings are not available) and some past participants may continue to frequent the forums even if they are not doing Nano. The site's largest surge is during November, and there are also significant surges during October, Camp Sessions, and in the month before each camp session. However, the sense of community is so strong that the forums still see activity when there is no NaNoWriMo event coming up or currently happening.

The forums serve many purposes: to let Wrimos gather and talk to each other about writing, to discuss their novels and the noveling experience, to find Wrimos in their area via regional lounges, and to procrastinate on reaching 50,000 words. Many Wrimos may form new friendships with people in threads they frequent, and some forums, such as the games and roleplaying forums are practically a culture unto themselves.

The forums have been around since 2002 and originally ran on PhpBB. The tech team used Xoops and later Drupal for the forum software. From fall 2011 to fall 2019, the site and forums were custom-built on Ruby on Rails. As of September 2019, the forums run on Discourse.

As of October 2016, the forums are only visible to logged-in users. Blame the spammers.

2018 Forum List and their Categories

This list is preserved for posterity and to aid in updating the above list, as the forum structure substantially changed in 2019. It may be moved to a separate page.

There are also separate forums for Camp NaNoWriMo that appear during camp season. In 2011 the forum was simply named Camp NaNoWriMo and appeared in the December and Beyond section; however, in 2012 the following forums became active:
