Facebook is a social network that lets users connect with each other and brands through friending, pages, and groups.

NaNoWriMo uses Facebook to announce events, share materials related to writing and books, and engage with Wrimos.

Fundraising with Facebook

At some point, Facebook introduced fundraising for charities. NaNoWriMo executive director Grant Faulkner and Board of Directors member Tony Shen experimented with fundraising via Facebook during #GivingTuesday 2016. The 2017 The Great NaNoWriMo Road Trip fundraiser marks the first fundraiser to fully support Facebook fundraising, and NaNoWriMo 2017 now primarily uses Facebook for individual Wrimo fundraising (though still uses Classy for Night of Writing Dangerously fundraising).

Regional Uses of Facebook

Many regions use Facebook pages to communicate information such as upcoming events, daily writing prompts, and more. This interaction can happen in one of two forms: pages or groups.

Facebook pages are public by default, and only the page administrators (typically the region's Municipal Liaisons) can post to the page. This makes Facebook pages the better choice if the main purpose of the page is to communicate information.

Facebook groups can be public or private. They are designed for group communication around an interest, event, or cause. This makes Facebook groups the better choice if the main purpose of the group is to interact with other members.

One downside of Facebook is the real name requirement (or at least a name that sounds like a "real" name, however Facebook defines this). This means that Wrimos who prefer using a pseudonym or going by their username may have to choose between convenience and privacy. Another downside of Facebook is the news feed algorithm do not show all the content for a given page or group post in a timely manner, making it easy to miss out on important info just because not enough people saw it.
