Affinity group

An affinity group is a group of people who have something in common. This affinity can be anything: a common interest, a racial identity, a generation.

Affinity groups on the NaNoWriMo forums refer to Discourse groups that allow access to a private forum. These forums allow Wrimos, typically of marginalized communities, to connect with each other without outsiders taking over the conversation. Joining a group unlocks the associated forum. Some groups require a moderator to approve group requests; however, Wrimos do not have to out themselves or show that they are X enough in any way.

After joining the affinity group, you may have to unmute the forum to view it, as new forums are muted by default.

The first affinity groups were the new Writers of Color forum in June 2020, followed by converting the previously public LGBTQIA+ forum to an affinity group by member vote[1]. The Teens, Pillow Fort, and Erotic Fiction forums followed suit over the coming months.

NaNoWriMo staff ask that participants who do not identify as a member of these groups to save the space for Wrimos who do. To connect with Wrimos based on another affinity, check out the Finding Your Crew and age group forums.
