Planning is the opposite approach to a novel from pantsing. Planners will start with an outline in mind before November starts. This outline will be followed, but can be as loose or as tight as the novelist wants it to be.

A loose outline dictates the story while still allowing some flexibility. A list of events with little detail (and the option to add in more events) is a good example of this.

A tight outline dictates the story with absolutely no flexibility, it dictates every event that happens with great detail, and gets very close to a word-for-word dictation of what the novel will contain.
